Svellheimish is the language spoken in Svellheim. It bears many similarities to Kreisic and Sevenish since all three derive from Nordmannish.

 

Lexicon

A

Althing (ALL-thing): The periodic gathering of jarls to discuss decisions of government and legal questions.

C

Carl (karl): A trained warrior. Sometimes spelled “karl.”

D

Drottning (drot-NING): Queen.

F

Fjallinger (FYAWL-in-gerr): Barbaric tribes from the harsh mountains in Svellheim.

G

Gestir (gest-EAR): Guest. Also the term for a specialized servant of the konung. These often serve as spies and policemen.

H

Hacksilver (hack-SYLL-ver): A form of wealth common in the Kreisens, the Seven Kingdoms, and Svellheim. They are strips of silver scored so that smaller portions of the strip may be hacked off.

Holmgang (holm-GANG): A duel between warriors in Svellheim. The word actually means "going to a small island."

Huscarl (HOOSE-carl): A trained warrior sworn to a house or a thegn. Sometimes spelled "huskarl."

J

Jarl (yarl): Major noble of Svellheim, usually the ruler of a steading.

K

Konung (KOE-nung): King.

L

Lawspeaker: A person tasked with understanding the konung's law and adjudicating legal questions. Each steading has at least one, and usually more.

Longship: A light, extremely fast ship.

S

Skald (skawld): Musician, bard.

Steading (STED-ing): The main political subdivision of Svellheim. Generally steadings include a number of towns and are ruled by a jarl. The konung has specific expectations of each steading depending upon their location, places within the steading, and size. There are currently 43 steadings in Svellheim.

T

Thegn (thain): Relatively minor noble. Often placed in charge of towns, cities, and other such things.

V

Vainonputki: A cosmetic from Svellheim. It is widely treasured as one of the best cosmetics in Eard. It is also the word for the plant whose oil is used as the base of the cosmetic.
