Demetrios III Murtzophlos was the emperor of Empire of Makhaira from 2057 to 2071. He was the third member of the Petraliphas Dynasty to hold the title.
He earned the epithet of "Murtzophlos," or "gloomy," for his pessimistic and paranoid disposition.
He was also obsessed with claiming more ports on the Middle Sea, most especially Alexandrovsk from the Matriarchate of Periaslavl, and Hanzekantoor of the Kreisens. Not surprisingly, this brought into conflict with Periaslavl, and more than a few large-scale skirmishes were fought around Markovi Kuli during the 2060s.
