The Hunter is a poem from the Qafric Wastes. It was recorded by the Mataran scholar Alemayehu during the 900s IR in his collection of Qafrianni poetry, the Book of Songs.
It describes a battle between a hunter and his prey. The hunter seeks to find his name in returning with the pelt of a tiger, but instead is killed by a great snake who squeezed him to death. It is a cautionary tale to warn against hubris.
Its most famous lines are:
The sirocco lifts tales like sand,
Hard songs to frighten every man.
One tells of braving tiger’s claws
but forgets the snake’s love of laws
